5 Steps for CHOOSING a mattress…

STEP 1  How old is your mattress?

This is the very first question you need to answer. Why? Well, the age of your mattress can play a big role in determining whether you need a new one. As a rule of thumb, you’ll want to start thinking about getting a new bed if you’ve had your old one for over 8 years. This isn’t a set standard by any means but is usually a good benchmark for checking in with your mattress and figuring out whether it’s still doing its job re: Lulling you to sleep!

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you waking up with new pains in the morning?
  • Do you have trouble finding a comfortable position at night?
  • Have you noticed any new dips in your mattress that can’t be fixed by rotating it regularly?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it may be time to spoil yourself with a new mattress

STEP 2  Determine your budget

Don’t always go with the cheapest option you find – This is a rule of thumb for most products you buy. Spending less for mattress simply means it has a lower durability, more toxins and lower sleep quality in general.

STEP 3  Mattress type, Spring or Foam

  • Spring: Spring mattresses have two central elements: an innerspring support core and a substantial foam comfort system. These mattresses provide a blend of bounce and contouring with low heat retention and can be a good fit for sleepers in any position depending on exactly how they are built.
  • Foam: These mattresses are made entirely with foam and no springs. They tend to provide above-average contouring to the body, pressure relief and motion isolation.

STEP 4 Determine your ideal sleeping position and Firmness

Most of us have a unique way of sleeping every night. No matter if you sleep on your side, stomach or back, or even if you switch throughout the night you will have to consider and choose the ideal type of bed based on your preference. So, take a moment and think, what’s your favorite sleeping position because that determines the ideal firmness of your new bed.

STEP 5 Consider your weight as a factor

You might be asking yourself, what does weight have to do with choosing a mattress? The truth is, support, hug, feel, sinkage and even cooling will depend on your body type and weight. Another harsh truth is that there is no “best” mattress for every one of us.
